Au Gratin Potatoes

I’ve never been a fan of au gratin potatoes but everyone else seems to love them so they should be included in the Family Favorites collection. Here’s the basic recipe. Feel free to spice it up a bit with your own additions like bacon, ham, broccoli, garlic, herbs, or even a bread crumb topping.

Au Gratin Potatoes
Serves: 6                Preheat Oven Temp: 375°

Ingredients List
6 medium size potatoes (about 2 lbs.)
1/4 cup butter
1 small onion, diced
1 Tb. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
2 cups milk
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (sharp preferred)


1 Wash the potatoes, then peel and slice into 1/8” thick slices. You need about 4 cups of slices.
2 In a medium to large saucepan, melt the butter and cook the onion 2-3 minutes to tender.
3 Stir in the flour, salt, and pepper and cook until bubbly, stirring constantly.
4 Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the milk and 1-1/2 cups of cheese. Stir to combine, then heat again until boiling. Boil while stirring for 1 minute.
5 Spread the potato slices in an ungreased 13 x 9 casserole dish, evenly filling the dish.
6 Pour the cheese sauce over the potatoes and mix in gently.
7 Bake uncovered for 1 hour. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheese over the potatoes and bake an additional 15 minutes until brown and bubbly.
8 Let sit for 5-10 minutes before serving.
